Reductions in the Tech Sector: Global and Ukrainian Challenges

Reductions in the Tech Sector: Global and Ukrainian Challenges

Since the beginning of 2024, the global tech sector has experienced widespread layoffs, AIN writes. Ukrainian tech companies have also faced the impact of these global changes alongside local challenges.

Among the key factors affecting both Ukraine and the global market are:

  • Global Economic Slowdown: Companies are optimizing expenses due to reduced demand for IT services.
  • Risks for Foreign Clients: The war in Ukraine undermines client confidence in collaborating with local teams.
  • Decline in Venture Investments: A lack of funding affects companies’ ability to expand their workforce.
  • Mobilization and Relocation: In 2023, out of Ukraine’s 362,000 IT professionals, approximately 5,000 joined the Armed Forces of Ukraine, while another 3,500 were exempted from mobilization.

In response to these challenges, in January 2024, the IT Ukraine Association appealed to the Verkhovna Rada, urging discussion of mobilisation risks associated with draft laws №10378 and №10379. These laws could have significant implications for Ukraine’s economy and IT industry.

Ukrainian IT companies compete with powerful players on the international stage, investing significant effort into promoting their capabilities and ensuring trust in Ukrainian IT. However, due to the war, clients are hesitant to collaborate with Ukraine — we remain in the red zone. With the adoption of new legislation, there is an increased risk that Ukrainian IT companies will have to establish offices abroad and reduce local teams,

– the IT Ukraine Association stated in its appeal.

Global Trends in the Tech Sector:

  • Artificial Intelligence (AI): This technology is transforming the labor market, creating new skill requirements. The ability to work with AI has become a critical competency.
  • Staff Optimization: Even leading companies like Google, Meta, and Microsoft are cutting jobs due to slower profit growth.

Modern IT professionals are adapting to these challenges, working with innovative technologies and remaining agile in a fast-changing environment. Despite the war and economic struggles, Ukrainian IT specialists demonstrate a high level of professionalism.

Top 5 Companies with Significant Ukrainian Presence (as of August 2024):

  • EPAM Ukraine — 9 600 Ukrainian professionals;
  • SoftServe — 7 335;
  • GlobalLogic Ukraine — 6 026;
  • Ajax Systems — 3 411;
  • Luxoft — 3 400.

The Ukrainian IT sector, despite its challenges, maintains its competitiveness. However, its further development requires state support, active collaboration among companies and the adoption of innovative practices.
