Global IT Market Leanings: Challenges, Layoffs, Leadership

IT Ukraine

In 2024, the Ukrainian IT sector led in innovation and digital transformation, according to the January issue of Focus ON Business (Pro Progressio) magazine article, co-authored by the IT Ukraine Association.

Despite the challenges, the industry is strengthening its integration into global markets, developing military technologies, and continuing to attract international investment. Ukraine continues to make significant strides in the development of digital innovations.

Kyiv has become the second GovTech centre in the world as part of the World Economic Forum’s network that promotes e-governance and digital skills in Ukraine. An important achievement was the inclusion of the Diia platform in TIME’s list of the best inventions of 2024, which underlines the country’s success in the digitalisation of public services.

Ukrainian IT specialists remain popular among international clients due to the optimal price-quality ratio. The industry is not experiencing a shortage of staff: there are more candidates than vacancies on popular job search sites.

Achievements of the IT sector:

  • The development of military technologies, including miltech startups that bring together IT, engineering and science professionals to create strategic innovations.
  • Innovative tools for public administration, such as Diia.Engine, which allows ministries and government agencies to quickly create and manage electronic registers.
  • Creation of the CodeUA platform, a marketplace that unites Ukrainian IT companies, simplifying the search for partners for international business and the conclusion of new contracts.
  • Participation in European alliances, such as the European Startup Nations Alliance (ESNA), which brings together 26 EU countries, Iceland and Ukraine.

Core competencies:

  • Digitalisation of public services, including the development of tools such as Diia.Engine.
  • Military developments for cybersecurity, aviation, water and land operations. Miltech startups are developing thousands of solutions to reduce risks to human life.
  • Integration into European markets, including the work of Ukrainian IT companies in Poland, Germany, the UK, and Scandinavian countries.

Despite its successes, the industry has faced a number of challenges: a 7% decline in IT services exports in August 2024, changes in tax policy, and infrastructure damage due to the war. Nevertheless, total export revenues in the first nine months of 2024 amounted to about $4.8 billion, which demonstrates the industry’s resilience. Check our Facebook for more details.

Projects of the Ministry of Digital Transformation have won the bronze Effie Award for the second time. The national educational platform Diia.Osvita was recognised for its effectiveness in marketing communications. This is proof that Ukraine’s digital initiatives serve as an example for the world, contributing to social development through innovation.
