The number of women, who want to work in IT, is getting bigger

May 23, 2018 – More and more women are interested in IT-career: the number of women applying for programming-related positions has been growing for the third year in a row. That’s the result of data analysis by DataArt on 2015-2017.

According to statistics, in 2017, the number of CVs from women on technical programming related positions was 44% higher than in 2016 and 65% higher than in 2015 (the study results are based on country data, where DataArt R&D centers are located and include a summary of 3715 women received from the companies).

The analysis shows that in the IT-industry, the most interesting for women are Quality Assurance and Quality Automation positions, which represent almost half of the total number of requests for the last three years. On the second place are positions of Java Developers, then goes .NET and JavaScript Developers.

According to DataArt, the lowest level of female candidates (about 5%) is among Android, C ++ and iOS-developing positions.

The situation in Ukraine corresponds to the general trend. According to the Ministry of Justice of Ukraine, 24% of the Ukrainian IT-industry are represented by women. Also, they take 35% of Ukrainian DataArt R&D centers, and in Kherson and Lviv this figure is 40%. The number of new CVs received from women in positions opened at the Ukrainian DataArt offices is also growing: in 2016 it was 4%, in 2017 it was already 11% (in 2015, women sent 776 CVs, in 2016 – 812 and in 2017 – 907).

Women, like men, are attracted by a less traditional approach to building a career in IT, less hierarchy of organizations, and dependence on leadership, flexive forms of work and social guarantees, which offers one of the most profitable sectors of Ukraine. The entry barrier in QA is lower, so more candidates are claiming these positions in general
— Dmytro Abramov, Delivery Manager in DataArt
