Small Business and Cyber Threats: How to Act Proactively and Safeguard Your Reputation

In the world of the digital economy, small businesses are no longer limited to local markets. Thanks to technology, businesses can now expand globally. However, this also increases risks — particularly cyber threats, which today pose a serious problem for small enterprises.

According to a global survey by Mastercard, 46% of small and medium-sized businesses have fallen victim to cyberattacks. The consequences of such attacks include financial losses, damage to reputation, and the need to restore customer trust. 80% of entrepreneurs note that after an attack, they spend a significant amount of time rebuilding relationships with partners and customers.

Why is cybersecurity important for small businesses?

If a small business is not protected from cyber threats, it risks not only its finances but also customer trust. Without reliable protection, this can lead to significant financial losses and difficulties in restoring its reputation.

How can small businesses protect themselves from cyber threats?

  • Risk Assessment: 86% of small businesses have already conducted a cybersecurity assessment, but only 23% are satisfied with the results. This indicates that many companies lack the necessary knowledge to protect themselves effectively.
  • Employee Training: Business owners often face the issue of low awareness among their employees regarding the importance of cybersecurity. According to data, 73% of entrepreneurs have noted difficulty in engaging their teams in online security matters.
  • Cybersecurity Tools: There are free online courses available for entrepreneurs that provide the basics of cybersecurity hygiene. For example, the “Basic Cyber Hygiene Knowledge” course by Diia.Business covers key rules to help entrepreneurs protect their businesses from major cyber threats.
  • Tailored Solutions: Solutions like RiskRecon or tools from companies such as VikingCloud allow entrepreneurs to identify vulnerabilities in their systems and prioritise responses to threats.

Recently, Volodymyr Pokatylov, Director of the ITU Data Center “PARKOVYI”, highlighted five technical solutions that have already become the new security standard for the company’s clients. Click here to learn more about the steps that will be useful for anyone looking to strengthen the cybersecurity resilience of their infrastructure.

Equally important are the recommendations from the CyberTech Committee members of ITU, who recently shared their experience in combating cyber threats at the Mind WinTech Summit 2025. They emphasised the importance of taking preventive measures and shared how to reduce costs for attack protection by focusing on implementing automated monitoring systems and using open resources for security. Furthermore, experts noted that the best way to overcome cyber threats is to act proactively by identifying vulnerable points in systems and actively testing infrastructure for potential threats.

Technology is changing rapidly, and so are the threats. Therefore, it is essential for small businesses to have access to resources to enhance their cybersecurity. Thanks to collective efforts, it is possible to create a secure environment for small businesses, allowing them to not only protect themselves but also thrive on the global market.
