On October 23 in London, the inspiring Tech Unity: UK & Ukraine 2024 event brought together over 100 participants from the tech ecosystems of the UK and Ukraine. Government officials, business leaders, and community representatives gathered to discuss mutual technological opportunities.

The event is conducted in cooperation with the Ministry of Digital Transformation of Ukraine.

Tech Unity: UK & Ukraine is one of the activities under the Good Governance Fund project “Business Revitalisation for Sustainable Growth” funded by UK International Development. The project delivery partners are Abt Global and IT Ukraine Association.

The event provided a platform for discussing ways to enhance cooperation and strengthen ties within the tech sector. Participants received insights into the future of Ukrainian innovations in UK tech and discussed global trends in Fintech, AI, inclusivity and the challenges of talent oversupply in the global IT market.

The event was opened by key speakers, including:

  • Oleksandr Bornyakov, Deputy Minister of Digital Transformation of Ukraine on IT Industry Development
  • André Kölln, Deputy Director and Head of the Ukraine Early Recovery and Reconstruction Department (UERRD), Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO)
  • Mariia Shevchuk, CEO at the IT Ukraine Association

Major Discussion Topics

  1. Integration of Ukrainian Technologies in the UK Ecosystem: Speakers emphasized that Ukrainian technologies have a huge potential to influence global trends, particularly in the UK, thanks to advances in artificial intelligence, cybersecurity and financial technologies. Cooperation between governments, private investors and business associations, including through the Tech Bridge initiative, is expanding trade and investment opportunities in the IT, defense and data analytics sectors. The tech sector is playing a key role in Ukraine’s post-war recovery, and support from UK companies can provide access to international markets and help develop digital infrastructure, which in turn creates the conditions for sustainable growth in both countries.
  2. Opportunities for Collaboration in Fintech and AI: Panelists noted that transparency, shared innovation vision, and experience exchange are essential to successful collaboration in the Fintech and AI sectors. Cross-regional opportunities for AI-integrated solutions in Fintech are growing, and company strategies focusing on partnerships help scale projects successfully. They recommended that startups focus on customer value creation and strategic alliances to ensure growth in a competitive environment.
  3. Diversity, Inclusivity, and Global Competition in IT: Experts noted the rapid rise in demand for professionals, creating both challenges and new opportunities for companies in the UK and Ukraine. In this context, collaboration helps optimize resources and address global talent gaps. The panelists emphasised the importance of inclusivity as a driver of work cultures that allows for adaptation to customer needs and innovation. Diversity also influences investment decisions, opening new opportunities for Ukrainian professionals through the TechBridge initiative, which can balance any potential talent surplus. Multicultural teams, as illustrated by the example of N-iX, bring fresh ideas that contribute to the success of projects. One of the key tips from the experts is to balance stability with innovation, which is especially important in the face of global challenges. The emphasis on inclusiveness, adaptation to changes in the labour market, and expansion of cross-regional cooperation is expected to grow.

The event concluded with a networking session, where participants discussed ways to implement new initiatives and partnerships in the UK and Ukrainian tech space. This event marked an important step in strengthening the tech partnership between the two countries.
