This year, the Global Teacher Prize Ukraine, in partnership with ITU Member SoftServe, is introducing a special award category for teachers of mathematics, algebra, and geometry. The winner will receive ₴500,000 to bring their own educational dream to life.
Supporting math teachers is critically important, as mathematics is the foundation of computer science and ICT. Investing in quality math education helps prepare young talents for successful careers in the IT industry and other fields.
My path in IT started at school — with the school mathematics. From the sixth grade, I participated in math olympiads, and I was lucky that my first teacher was my father, who passed on to me his love for this subject. The teachers who prepared their students for olympiads were like gods to me — it was then that I first realized the vital role they play. We must work with school teachers, support them, share modern methodologies, and recognise the very best. Mathematics is the queen of the sciences — it shapes thinking and fosters creativity. If children learn to be creative through math, they will be creative in tech, physics, chemistry, business — in anything. That’s why we at SoftServe support math teachers — because we believe the future of the industry starts in school,
– said Taras Kytsmey, co-founder, SoftServe.
According to the international PISA 2022 study, only 58% of Ukrainian school students reached the baseline level of mathematical literacy. The gap between Ukrainian students and their peers from OECD countries is equivalent to approximately one and a half years of schooling.
Additionally, the latest results of the National Multi-Subject Test (NMT) showed that the average math score among Ukrainian students was 132.5 out of 200. Despite these challenges, Ukraine has a strong tradition in mathematics education — our students have repeatedly won medals at the International Mathematical Olympiad.
