From Front-End to AI: How IT Education in Ukraine Has Changed Over 20 Years

SoftServe Academy, one of Ukraine’s leading IT education centers with 20 years of experience, has analyzed key technology learning trends among Ukrainians over the past two decades. Having trained more than 36 000 specialists, the Academy drew on its own data to track how the popularity of IT courses has shifted in response to labor market needs.

 

How the analysis was conducted

 

The study looked at graduate data from SoftServe Academy over the past 20 years. Experts examined how demand for different technology tracks changed based on students’ course and specialization choices across two periods: 2005-2020 and 2021-2025.

 

Top IT learning trends in 2005–2020

 

Despite rapid advances in technology, the 2005-2020 period largely focused on training for “classic” enterprise IT – building, maintaining, and upgrading large-scale corporate systems that keep major companies and organizations running. Key trends included traditional web frameworks, monolithic architectures, and a strong emphasis on testing. The last five years of this period brought cloud platforms, Fullstack JS, and rapid AI growth into the spotlight.

 

• Frontend (HTML/CSS/JavaScript, jQuery, Angular 1.x) was a major entry point into IT – about 20% of Academy graduates during this time specialized in it.
• QC + ATQC (manual testing, automation with Selenium, Java/Python) remained a steady choice – 17% of graduates.
• Java and .NET formed the core of enterprise solutions – roughly 12% and 8% of graduates, respectively.
• Python was used mainly for automation and scripting before Data Science took off – 5% of graduates.
• DevOps was just emerging, with early tools like Jenkins and Ansible – 4% of graduates.

   

Trends since 2021: New challenges, new directions

 

In recent years, IT education has shifted toward cloud technologies, full-stack JavaScript development, big data processing, and artificial intelligence – reflecting the market’s move from stable enterprise systems to flexible, scalable, and data-driven solutions.

 

• Frontend/Fullstack JS (HTML/CSS/JS, TypeScript, React/Next.js, Node + SSR, React Native) became the dominant web technology track – 29% of graduates from 2021–2025.
• DevOps/Cloud grew fivefold, with tools like Kubernetes, IaC, GitOps, and FinOps – 18% of graduates.
• Python tripled in popularity, becoming a key language for Data Science and AI – 14% of graduates.
• Java remains in strong demand – 13% of graduates.
• DB & Big Data (cloud DWH migration, Snowflake, BigQuery) gained momentum – 7% of graduates.
• AI became a trending specialization only in 2023 but already shows the fastest growth and highest demand.

   

Future outlook

 

The IT market keeps evolving, with new roles, tools, and technologies reshaping the skills employers need. Education is keeping pace – updating program content, formats, and learning speeds. SoftServe Academy takes a flexible and practical approach to make sure its courses stay relevant.

 

Looking ahead, AI will advance quickly and become deeply integrated into other technologies. For example, while generative AI may simplify web development, it won’t reduce the need for developers. Instead, it will make solutions more accessible and boost demand. AI will drive growth across the entire industry, ensuring continued need for skilled professionals in leading technologies.

 

Some IT roles will change as well – manual testers, for example, will focus more on automation. Staying relevant will require up-to-date skills, and SoftServe Academy is ready to deliver them.
