Almost a third of bachelors in technical specialties have a reduced level of English language proficiency while studying at a higher education institution. They pass the final exam worse than an entrance one. At the same time, future engineers speak English a little better than students of other specialties. Thus, for 70% of bachelor students in IT knowledge of a foreign language remains at the same level or higher than after school, meanwhile for non-technical graduates it is 60%. These are the data from the Kyiv School of Economics (KSE).
To improve English language skills for future engineers, KSE and IT company GlobalLogic have signed a Memorandum of Understanding. The company will fund partial and full scholarships for Ukrainian students in the school’s new English-language undergraduate programs – “Economics and Big Data” and “IT and Business Analysis”. GlobalLogic experts will be among the course teachers.
Although we see a positive trend in improving English language proficiency in Ukraine, few Ukrainians are fluent in it, even among engineers. Therefore, English-language undergraduate programs will help IT professionals gain the knowledge needed to work with international companies, – mentioned Yehor Stadnyi, Vice President of Bachelor Programs at the Kyiv School of Economics.
