How Business in Ukraine Keeps the Lights On: Key Facts from the "Energy Shift" Study

In Ukraine, business is actively transitioning to energy-independent and efficient operating models—a trend that is becoming defining for companies’ resilience under wartime conditions. This is the focus of the new infographic research, “Energy Shift” conducted between June and September of this year. It is based on a large-scale survey of 212 Ukrainian enterprises.

 

Russia has launched over 600 strikes on the Ukrainian energy system since 2022 and continues to attack critical infrastructure. Despite this, Ukrainian companies are making maximum efforts to ensure stable connection to the power grid and develop alternative power sources. Today, access to electricity is no longer just an operational necessity but a critical condition for business survival. Key indicators of the situation are provided below:

 

Impact of Strikes on Energy Infrastructure

76% of Ukrainian companies were affected by power cuts, with industrial companies being hit the hardest.

   

Steps Towards Energy Independence and Energy Efficiency

95% of companies are implementing solutions to help them use energy efficiently or become energy independent. Notably, 44% of companies began their energy transition even before the full-scale war.

   

The most prevalent steps include: installing backup power sources (74%), replacing lighting with LED systems (60%) and installing proprietary generation facilities (59%).

   

Proprietary Generation is the Trend

59% of companies have installed proprietary generation facilities, with solar panels and power plants being the most popular.

   

97% of those who installed generation facilities use the electricity generated for their own needs. 40% sell it or plan to sell it.

   

Results of the Transformation

68% of companies reduced their energy resource costs. The main solutions that helped achieve this were: installing proprietary generation, using energy-efficient equipment, and modernising production processes.

   

Finance: Business Relies on Its Own Resources

94% of companies finance their transformation using their own funds, with only 5% of companies utilising state support.
