In December 2021, more than 3,300 pupils from 95 schools in Lviv took part in the “Hour of Code”, a global initiative promoting programming among children. During the week more than 130 online lessons were held by 60 experienced mentors, including GlobalLogic engineers. Globally, more than 150 million students from 180 countries have already joined the activity.
The “Hour of Code” campaign aims to tell students about programming in one hour and demonstrate that computer science can be fun and exciting. The initiative lasted for a week and took place as part of Computer Science Week. In 2021, there were about 86,000 events registered on the official website of the “Hour of Code” campaign, and 84 of them were in Ukraine. This year, due to quarantine restrictions, programming lessons were held online.
10th grade pupils from almost a hundred schools in Lviv joined the activity. In addition, experienced engineers from Ukrainian IT companies held classes – 61 mentors totally. In Ukraine, one of the initiative partners was GlobalLogic – 10 specialists from the company shared their experience, told about basic principles of IT and technology features – explained who a DevOps engineer is and how to work with AI- and ML- technologies. More than 300 Lviv school children attended these lectures.
Business needs to be involved in the development of IT education at all levels – to encourage their professionals to share experiences, examples of real problems, and the ways of solving them. Many participants have been interested in preparing for development in the IT field, starting at school.
